Good Morning Mets Fans!

What a great night last night.

Two HRs by Ike "Money" Davis, two HRs by "In Rod We Trust" Barajas, including a game-winning walkoff, and a catch by Ike that was the play of the day.

Oh it was a dramatic night...

Rod Barajas' hand hurt...he got called for catcher's interference when Mike Pelfrey's pitchout wasn't wide enough and the crafty Giants catcher, Eli Whiteside, swung the bat and hit Rod in the mitt...it hurt, and Barajas knew his swings were painful, and therefore limited.
"I told myself I probably got one good swing," he said. "Once I take that swing, my finger's going to go numb."
But one swing was all the Mets needed from him in the bottom of the 9th as he took Sergio Romo deep with one on (Ike Davis walked) and one out.

Barajas cherished the moment:
"My whole body went numb after it went over the fence," Barajas said.
The older veteran catcher and the rookie phenom first baseman played alpha-omega for the Mets and led the team to victory.

Ike was moved down in the lineup because lefties had been 0 for 17 against Jonathan Sanchez on the year.  Ike wasn't phased a bit and had his best game of the year and first multihomer game of his young big league career.

The "Catch" can be seen here...words are tough to describe the acrobatic elegance of what this man can do with the glove.
"My biceps are a little sore from holding onto the fence," Davis said.
He added:
"Most of the time you don't get chances repeatedly like that," Davis said. "I got long arms, I guess."
Mike Pelfrey also played a key role in the victory, pitching into the 8th inning on a very stingy pitch count.  He looked phenomenal and could've pitched a complete game, but Jerry Manuel was cautious with him and went to Valdes in the 8th, who worked out of a jam.

Frankie Rodriguez gave up a tying solo shot in the 9th on a pitiful excuse for a changeup after shaking off the fastball that was called by Barajas.

But it's a team game, and his teammates, Ike Davis and Rod Barajas, picked him up.

It's certainly starting to feel magical around here and I will say this with certainty--these 2010 Mets are an easy team to root for.  Johan Santana on the mound today, in a game that could tell us a lot about the rest of his season...I can't wait.

Enjoy your coffee!

Omar is Wilpon's Guy

Bart Hubbach reported the following from Fred Wilpon in response to a question from The Post's Mike Puma: "Am I going to bring Omar [Minaya] back next year? Absolutely. That's a fact."

Oh boy.

Let's look at some of Omar's memorable moves, both good and bad...as you look through the list you will see some real doozies, including the trade for Bartolo Colon in exchange for Grady Sizemore, Brandon Phillips and Cliff Lee that might be, in my opinion, the worst trade of all time!

As GM of the Expos

As GM of the Mets

The noise Omar made in 2009 was primarily to throw some money around--he did this to acquire Frankie Rodriguez and to re-sign Ollie Perez. He also went cheap on the 5th starter, signing Tim Redding and Livan Hernandez. I liked the pickup of Alex Cora for the bench and the trade of Scott Shoeneweis.

The "big trade" of 2009 was an Omar creation--and I did like the trade at the time though I wish we had managed to hold on to Mike Carp, long a favorite of mine--The New York Mets sent Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, and Mike Carp to the Mariners and Joe Smith to the Indians in return for JJ Putz(closer), Sean Green(RP), and Jeremy Reed(OF). The Mets also dealt 3 other minor leaguers, including Jason Vargas.

The trade itself has actually failed for each team--Jason Vargas is 3-6 with a high ERA for Seattle--Endy Chavez went down for the season with an ACL--Joe Smith had a poor first half, and he is pitching well now--Aaron Heilman's been a huge disappointment. Franklin Gutierrez has been the best value of the whole deal--he's having a very good season for Seattle.

For the Mets the trade was supposed to be addition by subtraction, but it really hasn't worked out at all.

JJ Putz cost money for very little return, and his future is in doubt following surgery. Jeremy Reed is a dime a dozen player. Sean Green has flashed hot and cold.

The in-season trade of note was swapping Ryan Church for Jeff Francoeur--by all accounts this looks like a good move for both teams.

Bottom line is that Omar is from a GM school that is somewhat old fashioned--he likes to spend money--he likes older veterans--I believe he undervalues prospects and needs to learn to draft out of slot. I also think he fails when it comes to measuring players using newer, more advanced stats--something that is so commonplace these days.

The thing with Omar is it's not just the moves he makes--and again, he has made some good ones--but he has drafted poorly.

Remember, this is the guy who, in 2002, passed over Cole Hamels, Prince Fielder, Zach Grienke, James Loney, Jeremy Guthrie, Nick Swisher, Jeff Francoeur, Matt Cain, Joe Blanton and Scott Kazmir in order to take Clint Everts 5th overall.

So if we're to believe the Wilpon's it looks like the Mets will have Minaya at the helm for a few more years--that's unfortunate.

Putz or Wagner in 2010?

OK Mets fans, you have two setup guys here that want to close.

Each costs approx $8M in 2010 (Wags is a hair cheaper).

Who do you keep, and why?

For my money the call is easy: Keep Putz.

He's younger, his stuff "can be" better, and I just have the sneaking suspician that Wags is one bullpen warmpup toss away from being totally done.

That said, Wags looked great last night, and he is a lefty.

First Cain Beans Wright, then He Acts Like a Punk

Matt Cain just pulled a punk move.

After Hitting David Wright in the head he settled in and pitched a very solid game.

Then in the 8th, he gave up a run on two hits, and Giants Manager Bruce Bochy pulled him from the game.

As the Citi Field faithful gave him a mild booing on his way out (for obvious reasons), Cain decided to tip his cap....a little "FU" to the fans.

I've always though highly of Matt Cain, but that was a punk move.

The Fox broadcasters, Thom Brennaman and Mark Grace, were incredulous and really gave it to Cain with both barrels.

Mark Grace said, "David Wright is in the hospital right now, and that tip of the cap just told everyone that you (Matt Cain) don't care one bit. Something tells me he is going to look back on that with a lot of regret."

Here is the video of David Wright getting hit:

Good Morning Mets Fans! 6 in a Row!

There was something in the air that night,
The stars were bright, Fernando!

From scrap heap, to scrappy star. Fernando Tatis is baseball's feel good story of the year.

On a day the Mets learned the Moises Alou era at Shea is most likely over, Tatis, a Comeback Player of the Year candidate, did it again. He went 3 for 5 with two doubles and a homerun, while driving in 4 runs. His 7th inning two-run bomb put the Mets up for good.

He is winning over the hearts of his manager, teammates and the Shea faithful with his hustle, clutch hitting, and the energy and smile he carries around with him...he is a gamer and exactly the type of player NY fans love to cheer.

Tatis stroked a two-run double in the third inning against Barry Zito before untying a 3-3 game with a shot over the fence in left-center against Sergio Romo (0-1) in the seventh. Fans chanted "Ta-tis" following the homer and again as he came to bat in the eighth inning.

When you lose [Alou and Church] you think of replacing them with like pieces," interim manager Jerry Manuel said. "But if you look around, you might have had that piece staring you in the face."

"This is New York," Tatis said. "Sometimes they are going to boo you and sometimes they are going to clap for you. So far they've been great." "He's a good ballplayer. He's always been a tough out. He's not a surprise to the guys who know him," said Billy Wagner, who was starring for Houston when Tatis had his one brilliant year.

And the clutch stats certainly tell the tale of this unlikely hero. He is hitting 12 for 26, .462, with runners in scoring position. How about pressure? In "close and late" situations he is hitting .368.

Fernando-Mania!

How amazing were the Mets pitchers against the Giants? How about 3 runs and 9 hits in 3 games....that is staggering.

John Maine didn't have great control yesterday and his pitch count suffered, but he didn't allow the Giants much.

The bullpen, for the second straight game, was the star. 4.1 innings of one-hit ball. Yesterday it was Muniz, Schoeneweis (who got the win), Goggles and Billy Wagner.

Our young guys continue to rake--David Wright had two doubles and Jose Reyes drove in a run...not sure if you are aware, but neither player is going to the All-Star game.

So here we sit, after a 6-game winning streak, 4 games over .500, 1.5 games back in the NL East, and 3.5 games back in the NL Wild Card.

We talked about our favorable schedule earlier in the week, and how big a part that is going to play for the rest of the year. The Mets are very much in the hunt and are 14-9 under Jerry Manuel.

Guys are hitting, guys are pitching, we're running more and the results have been tremendous. Let's take it to the Rockies and close out the first half in style.

It's a good morning to be a Mets fans. Enjoy your coffee you wild-eyed optimists!

With the victory the Mets are now 2 games over .500 and absolutely brimming with confidence as they head to San Diego to complete the West coast trip.

Jose Reyes hit a leadoff double, then homered and singled to help John Maine and the Mets win the rubber game with the San Francisco Giants 5-3 on Wednesday.

"For me, it's only been a matter of time," Randolph said. "I know we can play better than we have. We've shown more consistency and that's the team we're going to be over a long season. I hope we're on a nice little groove.

Mike Pelfrey gets the start tonight as he stays in the rotation based on some particularly strong outings of late.

The always outstanding Ben Shipgel from the NY Times talks about the day's events.

Here's a nice recap from NJ.Com on the Mets victory.

John Delcos reports that the Mets feel good.

Here's a piece on Reyes and Beltran and their huge contributions during the Mets resurgence.

The NY Post has a good article on Pedro and how he feels after his comeback win.

More on Pedro and the smile he is bringing to his ailing father's face.

Notes
  • The Mets placed C Raul Casanova on the bereavement list following the death of his father, Raul Casanova Sr., and selected the contract of C Robinson Cancel from Triple-A New Orleans.
  • Martinez reported no problems a day after making his second start of the year and first since leaving his April 1 outing with a hamstring injury.
  • Mets OF Moises Alou, on the DL since May 22 with a strained right calf, had hoped to be activated as soon as Friday for a weekend series at San Diego but he might have to wait until Tuesday.
  • It's a known fact that coffee tastes 57.87% better after a Mets win!
