Good Morning Mets Fans! Back in 1st Place!

Daniel Murphy is a hitter--he hits, and hits, then he hits some more.

Leadoff hits, clutch hits, RBI hits, rally extending hits...he hits.

The Mets young ball striker is hitting .374 on the season with a 1.012 OPS and 20 RBIs in 99 at-bats. In September he's hitting .467 (14-for-30) and is .500 on the current trip (5-for-10).

With the Mets and Braves tied 5-5 he hit a 1-out rocket to the wall that plated two. All told it was part of a 4-run inning that led to victory--a victory that put the Mets back in 1st place over a Phillies team that finally lost a game.

Murphy--a solid citizen who is thoroughly enjoying the ride, had this to say: "It's the biggest thing that's ever happened to me," said Murphy, who has been a force from the left side since being called up in early August. "I'm just happy to be able to help this team win, because they've welcomed me with open arms and made me feel comfortable."

Mets manager Jerry Manuel plans to ride Murphy's hot hand for the next week. "He is going to play," said Manuel, "Our next six games are against right-handed pitchers, so he's the left fielder. There's no question he's a guy we could play every day. It's just tough to not use other people when your lineup is so out of whack with lefties like it is right now."

In a wonderful season for Mets fans, Daniel Murphy has been a breath of fresh air, an invigorating presence, and a hope for the future.

Yesterday youth was served. In addition to 23-year old Murphy, 22-year old Nick Evans hit a HR, 25-year old Jose Reyes had 3 hits and 2 RBIs, and 25-year old David Wright had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

Reyes started the game with a leadoff HR--he now has 69 extra-base hits on the year and is 4 hits away from 200 on the season. This is the Jose Reyes that is a force--the game changer, the leader, the turbocharger of the Mets offense. He is all smiles right now as the gritty Mets make their playoff push.

The Mets bullpen pitched fairly well. Yes Nelson Figueroa came on and was victimized by some poor defense, but all told the bullpen pitched 3 innings and did not allow an earned run.

Brian Stokes was especially impressive, throwing 2 innings and earning the win. Aaron Heilman got a big out, and it was hugs and handshakes after the game.

"For Aaron Heilman to get that out was not only big for us, but for him, too," Manuel said. "You could recognize the change in the flow of the game."

So the Mets have a Magic Number again (9) for the NL East, and another Magic Number (7) for the NL Wild Card.

This is the Mets division to win--just keep winning--just keep riding the youth--just keep allowing Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado to drive in runs--just piece together enough solid bullpen to close out the games.

Good Morning Mets Fans! Johan Santana!

What is an Ace?

In the military, an Ace is a pilot with 5 confirmed kills. In baseball, it's a dominant #1 starting pitcher--someone capable of shutting down an opponent, no matter how hot they are, and leading his team to victory.

I believe it's an overused term in today's game, and that there are only about a dozen in all of MLB.

Johan Santana is one of them. Johan Santana is an ace.

Though only 20th in MLB in Wins, thanks in part to a leaky bullpen in several of his starts, he is 4th in ERA, 3rd in Innings Pitched, 10th in WHIP, and 11th in Ks.

He is a gamer, a battler, a proud and dedicated craftsman, and yes my friends, he really is a New York Met.

After shutting out the Pirates in a complete game masterpiece in his last outing, Santana hurled another gem last night against a game and gritty Houston Astro club and their own star pitcher Roy Oswalt.

After 6 innings of shutout ball Johan had thrown over 100 pitches and immediately went to Jerry Manuel in the Mets dugout to make his case for a 7th inning.

"Johan had mentioned that the other guy was still out there," Manuel said with a laugh. "I thought that, for what he's done on the mound, I had to give him the benefit of the doubt. I thought that was only fair to him."

“I told Jerry I felt good,” Santana said. “I was there. I was throwing strikes.”

Santana got his way and put up another zero in the 7th. All told he tossed a career high 121 pitches and further endeared himself to the Shea faithful, who rewarded the star with a well-deserved ovation as he walked back to the dugout, spent, but happy.

"Right now, we've got a great momentum going and everything is right there in front of us, so I know I need to do my part to help out," Santana said. "At this point in the season, you want to show you're able to go deep in the game. We need that now even more because we don't have Billy, so what happened tonight was very satisfying."

Santana was helped along by Jose Reyes, who led the game off with a single and scored on a David Wright bloop single, and Brian Schneider, who cracked his 3rd homerun in 5 games. His dinger plated Ryan Church, who got on base with a hustle single dribbled down the third base line.

It sure was good to see Ryan Church back--the fans rose to their collective feet when he came to bat for the first time--it was more evidence that this team, this group of hustling, gritty professionals, have endeared themselves to the fanatics that pack the house day after day. Any lingering affects of last year's collapse have been fully exorcised.

The bullpen threw another strong outing--Aaron Heilman and Luis Ayala combined for two scoreless, hitless, walkless innings that featured 3 strikeouts.

Both pitchers looked dominant, and Ayala was simply awesome.

Brian Schneider, who knows Ayala very well from their time together with the Nats, agrees. “Coming here has given him a little hope,” Schneider said. “Sometimes change is good.”

In other news Luis Castillo joins the club for today's game and has been given back his starting second base job.

It will be very interesting to see if the change in chemistry impacts the club. Bottom line is that even though Castillo's replacements performed admirably, Luis is a high OBP guy with speed, and if he's physically fit, he can be a more consistent offensive player than Argenis Reyes and allow Damion Easley to be part of an increasingly strong bench.

John Maine on the hill tonight--watch him closely and see if gets the zip back on his fastball.

The Brilliance of Mike Pelfrey

Mike Pelfrey continues to amaze Mets fans with his outstanding pitching. He tossed a complete game 3-hitter tonight and left 50,000 screaming Mets fans enraptured as he closed out the game in fine fashion.

Now 12-8 on the year, the Mets young stud leads the team in victories and continues to go deep into games to help the pitching staff.

He totally rewarded manager Jerry Manuel's confidence in him by punching out Chipper Jones and inducing two weak flyouts to finish the 9th inning in style.

Good Morning Mets Fans!

Some games just get the juices flowing, and last night's thrilling come from behind victory over the Braves was certainly one of them.

Ollie Perez started for the Mets and didn't have his best stuff. He gutted it out and only gave up 3 runs in 6 2/3, but he also walked 5 and gave up 7 hits. Still, he battled all the way, and the Braves scored all 3 of their runs in the third inning.

The old Ollie might have imploded early on, but this "Post Peterson" version did everything he could and somehow managed to put up a bunch of zeros for his team before exiting in the 7th with runners on first and third and one out, and the Mets on the wrong side of the score in a 3-2 game.

"I was all over the place," said Perez, "but the guys picked me up."

Newly acquired Luis Ayala had his "welcome to the Mets moment." It was a huge spot--one where the Mets bullpen hasn't always succeeded in recent times.

Taking the ball from his countryman, Ayala immediately knocked down Omar Infante with his first pitch. He mixed in a plus fastball with his signature sinker and got both Infante and Brian McCann to hit short popups. Absolutely changed the entire feel of the game. The Braves went from poised to extend their lead, to frustration and tightness.

The Shea faithful rewarded the newcomer with a thundering, and well-deserved, ovation.

"That probably kind of changed the momentum right there," Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. "To hold them right there probably was the turning point in the game."

The bullpen was efficient the rest of the way. Aaron Heilman pitched the 8th, and Scott Shoeneweis took his turn in the 9th in the "closer by committee" lottery. He had an outstanding inning.

"It was nice to be on the other end of one of those games," Schoeneweis said. "Somebody else's bullpen gave it up and ours didn't. Amazing how that works sometimes."

After Heilman held the Braves in check, the Mets stormed out in the 8th and opened the floodgates. The surging first-place Mets loaded the bases twice and did something they haven't done often with the sacks full this year--they delivered.

Carlos Delgado had the big hit--a smoked opposite field double that banged loudly off the fence and plated two.

Mr. Professional , Damion Easley, added to the fun after Fernando Tatis was intentionally walked. Easley hit a solid line drive single that plated two more. Ramon Castro joined in the fun with an RBI double.

All told the Mets scored 5 and pulled victory from the jaws of defeat---a championship caliber 8th inning effort.

"Good teams win these kinds of games," said Delgado. "They find a way to battle back and win these games. You're not going to win them all, but it's nice when you do."

It was a thrilling, scintillating, pump up the players and fans type of win, and it kept the Mets 1.5 games up on Philly and stretched the lead over the fading Fish to 4.5 games.

Of course it wasn't all good news for the Mets (is it ever?)...the inflammation in closer Billy Wagner's elbow is getting worse, not better, and he is shut down indefinitely. His teammates realize how important he is, but they also believe in themselves and their ability to get the job done.

"This is about picking each other up," Delgado said. "Billy's a big part of our bullpen, but we've got to do what we can do until he comes back."

Game Information

Good Morning Johan Santana (Mets) Fans!

It was the best of times, it was the best of times.

Johan Santana, the Ace, took the mound yesterday with a singular purpose--to get a win. The fact that he accomplished his mission in such an utterly dominant fashion was not in the least bit surprising.

The results, a 3-hit shutout in which all 3 hits were singles, delivered in 113 crisp pitches (85 for strikes), is testament to how good he really is.

Want more? He threw a first pitch strike to 26 of the 31 batters he faced. Catcher Brian Schneider said Johan shook him off 5 times, and a few of those were decoys.

Still need more? In August he is 2-0 in 4 starts with a 1.84 ERA, and 23 Ks in 29.1 innings. This after going 2-0 in July with a 2.65 ERA.

So while the rest of the league gets weaker, Johan Santana, Brandon Webb and CC Sabathia get stronger. This is why they are aces, this is why the Mets needed Santana, and this is why he is invaluable to the club.

Think of the tertiary effects of his start--the Mets are in the middle of a streak of 23 games in 23 days--the closer is on the shelf, and guys are tired. When your Ace goes out and pitches a shutout you essentially give 2/3rds of the team the day off. He made it easy--gave everyone a mental and physical blow--he dominated.

"I wanted to give the guys out there a break," Santana said. "That's why I'm happy I pitched the complete game. That it was shutout, too ... that's better."

"It was actually kind of boring out there, it made for great watching," Aaron Heilman said.

"He was very adamant about going back out for the ninth," Manuel said. "Which is a good thing. When you can, you like to reward them for all the other times we've had to take them out."

"It's always good when you give your team and your bullpen a break," said Santana, the only Met with a complete game in 2008. "More than anything, that's what I was trying to do. And as you go in the game, and then you see how everything is coming along, I was just trying to do my job."

Trust us Johan, you did your job and then some.

Well the Mets sure are playing some good ball under Jerry Manuel now, aren't they? He seems to push the right buttons, rest guys when they need it, communicate well, and get the guys to play hard for him. Leadership is either the most overrated or underrated part of an organizational hierarchy, depending on who you talk to.

Is it important in big league baseball? Is Jerry a better leader than Willie? We'll never really know, but what we do know is that for this year, the results speak for themselves:

Good Morning Mike Pelfrey (Mets) Fans!

Well, well, well....we beat the Pirates!

OK, so it wasn't a drubbing, but it was a win, and a very crisply played win from a pitching and defensive point of view.

Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, Argenis Reyes and Mike Pelfrey all contributed to a Mets night of Web Gems, and Argenis Reyes play may have been the best of all.

"Anytime you play that kind of defense with a sinkerball pitcher, it gives you a chance to win," interim manager Jerry Manuel said.

Mike Pelfrey was simply terrific last night--not terrific in the "he blew everyone away with his stuff" kind of way, but something far more important...he was a craftsman, a very controlled craftsman.

"Winning these kinds of games is what you're supposed to do if you want to be a playoff team, so it's a nice feeling for us to take care of business," Pelfrey said.

"He did a good job," New York manager Jerry Manuel said. "He got the big outs when he needed them. It's a sign that he's evolving into a quality pitcher. He doesn't panic when he gets in trouble. He's maturing into the type of pitcher that can get the big outs."

Pittsburgh hit into two double plays against Pelfrey and wasted leadoff hits in the sixth and seventh inning.

"He was tough on us," Pittsburgh manager John Russell said.

For the 5th time in 9 starts, which dates back to July 8th, Mike Pelfrey didn't issue a walk.

How amazing is that? In his 32 career starts before the July 8th game he had always walked at least 1 batter per game. In fact, his BB/9 numbers were downright dreadful. In the first half of 2008 he was a walk machine, with 43 walks in 93.2 innings over 16 games.

The change has been remarkable. Since July 8th he has walked a minuscule 5 batters in 51.1 innings over 9 games.

Yes my friends, Mike Pelfrey is a control pitcher who happens to throw in the mid-90s with a devastating sinker. These are the pitchers who have very long, and very successful, careers.

So with a nifty 98 pitches over 7 shutout innings, Jerry went to the bullpen, and they did their job in fine fashion. Jack Wilson hit a solo shot off of Duaner Sanchez, but Feliciano and Aaron Heilman came in and secured the victory.

Heilman earned his 3rd save of the year and impressed everyone, including himself, with his bounceback after the Monday debacle. Two appearances and no hits or runs since that game.

"It's a good thing about being a reliever: You're going to get another chance pretty quickly," Heilman said.

A nice win. A 2-1 win. A win in which Carlos Beltran fired a bullet home to throw out a runner. A win in which Argenis Reyes sprinted to his left and made a 1 in a 100 play in the 9th to help seal it.

It was a team win and kept the Mets 1 game in front of the Phils while stretching the lead over the reeling Marlins to 3.5 games.

I loved it!

Tonight the road trip continues with Pedro on the hill. We're 4-0 on the trip and the schedule is still very much in our favor.
